I woke up around 4am on the morning of August 21. As I was laying there with my thoughts wandering all over, the words 'hey there have you heard, listen to me I've got a word' came to mind. I remember thinking that's the essence of the great commission, to share a word about Jesus. I even had a little melody floating in my mind for those words because 'song' immediately was my thought. I can't remember if I actually worked out any additional lines right then or not.
I finally went back to sleep. After I got up I remembered a little bit about the few words I had, but not much about the melody. Eventually I had some time that morning to grab my guitar and seriously try and recall the melody and any more words. But I knew if there was a song there it was simply an anthem to share who Jesus is and what he did for us all ('have you heard'). In a couple of hours I had the verses and chorus basically written.
The inspiration was simple. I know what Jesus did for me individually and for the world corporately and I know we, who profess to be followers, are supposed to 'have a word' when the moment is right to share. And the word has a name, 'his name is Jesus'.
