When you use a person`s name you are speaking specifically about them, leaving no doubt as to whom you are referring.
It is also a sign of respect to call the person`s name to whom you are speaking or referring.
When we think of the `name of the Lord` we should not be thinking `God`. God is simply the generic name for deity. → There are 87 instances of the phrase `the name of the Lord` in the Old Testament.
→ There are 21 instances of the phrase `the name of the Lord` in the New Testament. → There are 11 instances of the phrase `the name of Jesus` in the New Testament. → There are 8 instances of the phrase `the name of the Lord Jesus` in the New Testament.
Who is Lord? Jesus. So what is the name of the Lord? Jesus
Does it make sense that we could replace every instance of `the name of the Lord` with `the name of the Lord Jesus`? I think so. The fact that the writers of the Old Testament did not know the name of the Lord does not imply that the Old Testament Lord is different than that which is revealed in the New Testament.
The following verses have had the phrase `the name of the Lord` replaced with `the name of the Lord Jesus`. Notice how this clears up the confusion about God. He is no longer different in the Old Testament and New Testament. He is the Holy Spirit who is the Spirit Of Christ Jesus.
And he builded an altar there, and called upon the name of the Lord, and pitched his tent there: and there Isaac's servants digged a well. |
And the Israelitish woman's son blasphemed the name of the Lord, and cursed. And they brought him unto Moses: (and his mother's name was Shelomith, the daughter of Dibri, of the tribe of Dan:) |
And they said unto him, From a very far country your servants are come because of the name of the Lord, your Lord: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt,  |
Then said David to the Philistine, You come to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the Lord of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.  |
And Jonathan said to David, Go in peace, forasmuch as we have sworn both of us in the name of the Lord, saying, The Lord be between me and you, and between my seed and your seed for ever. And he arose and departed: and Jonathan went into the city. |
And David arose, and went with all the people that were with him from Baale of Judah, to bring up from there the ark of the Lord, whose name is called by the name of the Lord of hosts that dwells between the cherubims.   Another sign of David's arrogance in deciding that he would bring up the ark in the manner he saw fit. |
Only the people sacrificed in high places, because there was no house built unto the name of the Lord, until those days. |
You know how that David my father could not build an house unto the name of the Lord Almighty for the wars which were about him on every side, until the Lord put them under the soles of his feet.  |
And when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon concerning the name of the Lord, she came to prove him with hard questions. |
And the king said unto him, How many times shall I adjure you that you tell me nothing but that which is true in the name of the Lord? |
And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.  |
And David said to Solomon, My son, as for me, it was in my mind to build an house unto the name of the Lord my Lord:  |
And Solomon determined to build an house for the name of the Lord, and an house for his kingdom. |
Behold, I build an house to the name of the Lord my Lord, to dedicate it to him, and to burn before him sweet incense, and for the continual shewbread, and for the burnt offerings morning and evening, on the sabbaths, and on the new moons, and on the solemn feasts of the Lord, our Lord. This is an ordinance for ever to Israel.  |
And the king said to him, How many times shall I adjure you that you say nothing but the truth to me in the name of the Lord? |
They compassed me about like bees; they are quenched as the fire of thorns: for in the name of the Lord I will destroy them. |
