It is also a sign of respect to call the person`s name to whom you are speaking or referring.   

When we think of the `name of the Lord` we should not be thinking `God`.   God is simply the generic name for deity.   
   → There are 87 instances of the phrase `the name of the Lord` in the Old Testament.   
   → There are 21 instances of the phrase `the name of the Lord` in the New Testament.   
   → There are 11 instances of the phrase `the name of Jesus` in the New Testament.   
   → There are 8 instances of the phrase `the name of the Lord Jesus` in the New Testament.   

Who is Lord?   Jesus.   

And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of the Holy Spirit Father. Phi 2:11 All humanity will speak in confession that Jesus is Lord and thus glorify the Father whose plan He fulfilled.      Who is the Father?     Holy Spirit.      It was the Holy Spirit that impregnated Mary.     It was the Holy Spirit that was in Jesus empowering Him to speak and do His will.      Jesus said if you have seen me you have seen the Father.         → Jesus is the body of the Holy Spirit.         → The Holy Spirit is the Spirit Of Christ Jesus.      The glory of the Holy Spirit Father is His elation in bringing about the salvation of so many to be forever in His presence in full fellowship.

So what is the name of the Lord?   Jesus

Does it make sense that we could replace every instance of `the name of the Lord` with `the name of the Lord Jesus`?   I think so.   The fact that the writers of the Old Testament did not know the name of the Lord does not imply that the Old Testament Lord is different than that which is revealed in the New Testament.   

The following verses have had the phrase `the name of the Lord` replaced with `the name of the Lord Jesus`.   Notice how this clears up the confusion about God.   He is no longer different in the Old Testament and New Testament.   He is the Holy Spirit who is the Spirit Of Christ Jesus.   

And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Gen 4:26

And he removed from there unto a mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, having Bethel on the west, and Ai on the east: and there he builded an altar unto the Lord, and called upon the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Gen 12:8

Unto the place of the altar, which he had made there at the first: and there Abram called on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Gen 13:4

And she called the name of the Lord that spoke unto her, You Lord see me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that sees me? Gen 16:13

And Abraham planted a grove in Beersheba, and called there on the name of the Lord, the everlasting Lord. Gen 21:33

And he builded an altar there, and called upon the name of the Lord, and pitched his tent there: and there Isaac's servants digged a well. Gen 26:25

You shall not take the name of the Lord, your Lord in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that takes his name in vain. Exo 20:7 The penalty for taking the Lord's name in vain was death.     Why so harsh?         → it reflects unbelief in the Lord or at least disrespect of Him.         → a person who does not honour the Lord is dangerous    → rebellion against the Lord results in rebellion against society    → threats to the survival of society are serious

And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before you; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show kindness on whom I will show kindness. Exo 33:19 Preincarnat Jesus speaks to Moses about His goodness and may have even given Him His name.     He tells Him of His Grace that comes out of His goodness and His love.     How that He will be merciful out of His own goodness.

And the Lord descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Exo 34:5 Preincarnate Jesus descended in the cloud to give understanding of who He is.

And the Israelitish woman's son blasphemed the name of the Lord, and cursed.     And they brought him unto Moses: (and his mother's name was Shelomith, the daughter of Dibri, of the tribe of Dan:) Lev 24:11

And he that blasphemes the name of the Lord, he shall surely be put to death, and all the congregation shall certainly stone him: as well the stranger, as he that is born in the land, when he blasphemes the name of the Lord, shall be put to death. Lev 24:16

You shall not take the name of the Lord, your Lord in vain: for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that takes his name in vain. Deu 5:11

For the Lord, your Lord has chosen him out of all your tribes, to stand to minister in the name of the Lord, him and his sons for ever. Deu 18:5

Then he shall minister in the name of the Lord Almighty, as all his brothers the Levites do, which stand there before the Lord. Deu 18:7

When a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord has not spoken, but the prophet has spoken it presumptuously: you shall not be afraid of him. Deu 18:22

And the priests the sons of Levi shall come near; for them the Lord, your Lord has chosen to minister unto him, and to bless in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ; and by their word shall every controversy and every stroke be tried: Deu 21:5

And all people of the earth shall see that you are called by the name of the Lord Jesus Christ; and they shall be afraid of you. Deu 28:10

Because I will publish the name of the Lord Jesus Christ: ascribe you greatness unto our Lord. Deu 32:3

And they said unto him, From a very far country your servants are come because of the name of the Lord, your Lord: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt, Jos 9:9

Then said David to the Philistine, You come to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the Lord of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 1Sa 17:45

And Jonathan said to David, Go in peace, forasmuch as we have sworn both of us in the name of the Lord, saying, The Lord be between me and you, and between my seed and your seed for ever.     And he arose and departed: and Jonathan went into the city. 1Sa 20:42

And David arose, and went with all the people that were with him from Baale of Judah, to bring up from there the ark of the Lord, whose name is called by the name of the Lord of hosts that dwells between the cherubims. 2Sa 6:2 Another sign of David's arrogance in deciding that he would bring up the ark in the manner he saw fit.

And as soon as David had made an end of offering burnt offerings and peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord of hosts. 2Sa 6:18

Only the people sacrificed in high places, because there was no house built unto the name of the Lord, until those days. 1Ki 3:2

You know how that David my father could not build an house unto the name of the Lord Almighty for the wars which were about him on every side, until the Lord put them under the soles of his feet. 1Ki 5:3

And, behold, I purpose to build an house unto the name of the Lord my Lord, as the Lord spoke unto David my father, saying, Your son, whom I will set upon your throne in your room, he shall build an house unto my name. 1Ki 5:5

And it was in the heart of David my father to build an house for the name of the Lord of Israel. 1Ki 8:17

And the Lord has performed his word that he spoke, and I am risen up in the room of David my father, and sit on the throne of Israel, as the Lord promised, and have built an house for the name of the Lord of Israel. 1Ki 8:20

And when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon concerning the name of the Lord, she came to prove him with hard questions. 1Ki 10:1

And call you on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ: and the Lord that answers by fire, let him be the Lord.     And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken. 1Ki 18:24

And with the stones he built an altar in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ: and he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed. 1Ki 18:32

And the king said unto him, How many times shall I adjure you that you tell me nothing but that which is true in the name of the Lord? 1Ki 22:16

And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.     And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them. 2Ki 2:24

But Naaman was angry, and went away, and said, Behold, I thought, He will surely come out to me, and stand, and call on the name of the Lord Almighty, and strike his hand over the place, and recover the leper. 2Ki 5:11

And when David had made an end of offering the burnt offerings and the peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. 1Ch 16:2

And David went up at the saying of Gad, which he spoke in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. 1Ch 21:19

And David said to Solomon, My son, as for me, it was in my mind to build an house unto the name of the Lord my Lord: 1Ch 22:7

Now set your heart and your soul to seek the Lord, your Lord; arise therefore, and build you the sanctuary of the Lord, to bring the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and the holy vessels of the Lord, into the house that is to be built to the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. 1Ch 22:19

And Solomon determined to build an house for the name of the Lord, and an house for his kingdom. 2Ch 2:1

Behold, I build an house to the name of the Lord my Lord, to dedicate it to him, and to burn before him sweet incense, and for the continual shewbread, and for the burnt offerings morning and evening, on the sabbaths, and on the new moons, and on the solemn feasts of the Lord, our Lord.     This is an ordinance for ever to Israel. 2Ch 2:4

Now it was in the heart of David my father to build an house for the name of the Lord of Israel. 2Ch 6:7

The Lord therefore has performed his word that he has spoken: for I am risen up in the room of David my father, and am set on the throne of Israel, as the Lord promised, and have built the house for the name of the Lord of Israel. 2Ch 6:10

And the king said to him, How many times shall I adjure you that you say nothing but the truth to me in the name of the Lord? 2Ch 18:15

Now the rest of the acts of Manasseh, and his prayer unto his Lord, and the words of the seers that spoke to him in the name of the Lord of Israel, behold, they are written in the book of the kings of Israel. 2Ch 33:18

And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return there: the Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Job 1:21

I will praise the Lord according to his righteousness: and will sing praise to the name of the Lord most high. Psm 7:17 After stating many wonderful things about the Lord's justice, David begins to praise the Lord and sing to Him because he loves what the Lord stands for and who He is.

Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the Lord, our Lord. Psm 20:7 What is the name of the Lord our the Lord?     Jesus.      There is power in the name of Jesus.

So the heathen shall fear the name of the Lord, and all the kings of the earth your glory. Psm 102:15 When Christ Jesus returns He will receive glory and honour albeit in fear by those who have rejected Him

To declare the name of the Lord in Zion, and his praise in Jerusalem; Psm 102:21 health and prosperity come to those who honour the Lord with praise and thanksgiving.

Praise you the Lord.     Praise, O you servants of the Lord, praise the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Psm 113:1 why?     Because He is worthy of all praise and honor and glory for His goodness, mercy, Grace and love.

Blessed be the name of the Lord from this time forth and for evermore. Psm 113:2 Whenever a person comes to the point of revelation of the love of the Lord, they begin an eternal journey of praise, glory, honour and fellowship with their Creator.

Then called I upon the name of the Lord Jesus Christ; O Lord, I beseech you, deliver my soul. Psm 116:4

I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Psm 116:13 What we are able to give to the Lord is what we have received from Him.     So, we receive His salvation, we take advantage of our access to the Throne Of Grace.      As we are blessed we overflow onto others so that they turn to the fount of all blessings.

I will offer to you the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call upon the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Psm 116:17 circumstances can make it difficult to praise and thank the Lord but if we sacrifice thanksgiving and praise we quickly enter into victory.

All nations compassed me about: but in the name of the Lord will I destroy them. Psm 118:10 When Jesus returns all nations will resist Him but Jesus will destroy them with the Word Of His Mouth.

They compassed me about; yes, they compassed me about: but in the name of the Lord I will destroy them. Psm 118:11

They compassed me about like bees; they are quenched as the fire of thorns: for in the name of the Lord I will destroy them. Psm 118:12

Blessed be he that comes in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ: we have blessed you out of the house of the Lord. Psm 118:26 Jesus is the name of the Word and Holy Spirit.

Where the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord, unto the testimony of Israel, to give thanks unto the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Psm 122:4 The assembling of ourselves together in the name of Jesus is edifying, bringing us to greater praise and thanksgiving for His many benefits.

Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth. Psm 124:8 What is the name of the Lord?     Jesus It is critical that we use our Lord's name when talking to Him or using His authority.

Neither do they which go by say, The blessing of the Lord be upon you: we bless you in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Psm 129:8 No hope of relief or mercy or blessing is the sad end of those who deny Christ Jesus as Lord and Saviour and Kind.

Praise you the Lord.     Praise you the name of the Lord Jesus Christ; praise him, O you servants of the Lord. Psm 135:1 Jesus Is Lord

Let them praise the name of the Lord Jesus Christ: for he commanded, and they were created. Psm 148:5

Let them praise the name of the Lord Jesus Christ: for his name alone is excellent; his glory is above the earth and heaven. Psm 148:13 The name of the Lord is Jesus.     He is worthy of all praise, glory and honour both now and forever.

The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runs into it, and is safe. Pro 18:10

In that time shall the present be brought unto the Lord of hosts of a people scattered and peeled, and from a people terrible from their beginning hitherto; a nation meted out and trodden under foot, whose land the rivers have spoiled, to the place of the name of the Lord of hosts, the mount Zion. Isa 18:7

Wherefore glorify you the Lord in the fires, even the name of the Lord of Israel in the isles of the sea. Isa 24:15 Since this day is coming, we aught to be praising the Lord and witnessing to the lost.

Behold, the name of the Lord comes from far, burning with his anger, and the burden thereof is heavy: his lips are full of indignation, and his tongue as a devouring fire: Isa 30:27

Hear you this, O house of Jacob, which are called by the name of Israel, and are come forth out of the waters of Judah, which swear by the name of the Lord, and make mention of the Lord of Israel, but not in truth, nor in righteousness. Isa 48:1

Who is among you that fears the Lord, that obeys the voice of his servant, that walks in darkness, and has no light?     let him trust in the name of the Lord, and stay upon his Lord. Isa 50:10

Also the sons of the stranger, that join themselves to the Lord, to serve him, and to love the name of the Lord, to be his servants, every one that keeps the sabbath from polluting it, and takes hold of my covenant; Isa 56:6

So shall they fear the name of the Lord from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun.     When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Holy Spirit shall lift up a standard against him. Isa 59:19 The Enemy cannot come into the Presence of the Holy Spirit.      When the Enemy comes rushing toward you, realize that it is just a bluff.      Speak a word of command and the Holy Spirit will put to flight the Enemy.     Jam 4:7

Surely the isles shall wait for me, and the ships of Tarshish first, to bring your sons from far, their silver and their gold with them, unto the name of the Lord, your Lord, and to the Holy One Of Israel, because he has glorified you. Isa 60:9

At that time they shall call Jerusalem the throne of the Lord; and all the nations shall be gathered unto it, to the name of the Lord, to Jerusalem: neither shall they walk any more after the imagination of their evil heart. Jer 3:17

Therefore thus says the Lord of the men of Anathoth, that seek your life, saying, Prophesy not in the name of the Lord, that you die not by our hand: Jer 11:21

Why have you prophesied in the name of the Lord, saying, This house shall be like Shiloh, and this city shall be desolate without an inhabitant?     And all the people were gathered against Jeremiah in the house of the Lord. Jer 26:9

Then said the princes and all the people unto the priests and to the prophets; This man is not worthy to die: for he has spoken to us in the name of the Lord, our Lord. Jer 26:16

And there was also a man that prophesied in the name of the Lord, Urijah the son of Shemaiah of Kirjathjearim, who prophesied against this city and against this land according to all the words of Jeremiah: Jer 26:20

As for the word that you have spoken unto us in the name of the Lord, we will not hearken unto you. Jer 44:16

And you shall eat in plenty, and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord, your Lord, that has dealt wondrously with you: and my people shall never be ashamed. Joe 2:26

And it shall come to pass, that whoever shall call on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the Lord has said, and in the remnant whom the Lord shall call. Joe 2:32

And a man's uncle shall take him up, and he that burns him, to bring out the bones out of the house, and shall say unto him that is by the sides of the house, Is there yet any with you?     and he shall say, No.     Then shall he say, Hold your tongue: for we may not make mention of the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amo 6:10

For all people will walk every one in the name of his god, and we will walk in the name of the Lord, our Lord for ever and ever. Mic 4:5

And he shall stand and feed in the strength of the Holy Spirit, in the majesty of the name of the Lord Almighty; and they shall abide: for now shall he be great unto the ends of the earth. Mic 5:4 And He ( Jesus) shall stand and in the strength of His Holy Spirit, in The Majesty of the name ( Jesus) of His Holy Spirit who is God Joh 4:24.      Jesus, the body and soul of the Holy Spirit, will reign forever.     All will come to bow down before Him.     Rom 14:11

For then will I turn to the people a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of the Lord, to serve him with one consent. Zep 3:9

I will also leave in the midst of you an afflicted and poor people, and they shall trust in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Zep 3:12

And it shall come to pass, that when any shall yet prophesy, then his father and his mother that begat him shall say unto him, You shall not live; for you speak lies in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ: and his father and his mother that begat him shall thrust him through when he prophesies. Zec 13:3

And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the son of David: Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ; Hosanna in the highest. Mat 21:9 This was Nisan 10, the day that the pascal lamb was chosen.      What does in mean by In The Name Of the Lord?      It means that the one coming is the Lord and that the one coming bears the name of the Lord.      The name of the Lord ( God) is Jesus.

For I say unto you, You shall not see me henceforth, till you shall say, Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Mat 23:39 Jesus only appeared to His disciples after His resurrection - not to any of the unbelievers.     At His return Israel will welcome Him because He is coming to save them from annihilation by the Anti Christ.      In that day they will believe in the name Jesus, which is the name of the Lord God.

And they that went before, and they that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna; Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ: Mar 11:9

Blessed be the kingdom of our father David, that comes in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ: Hosanna in the highest. Mar 11:10

Behold, your house is left unto you desolate: and truly I say unto you, You shall not see me, until the time come when you shall say, Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Luk 13:35 But then He pronounces a curse on them which will not be lifted until they receive the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Saying, Blessed be the King that comes in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest. Luk 19:38

Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that comes in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Joh 12:13 This is not Sunday but Friday 10th Nisan in which the lamb was chosen to be the pascal lamb.

And it shall come to pass, that whoever shall call on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ shall be saved. Act 2:21 The 'name of the Lord' is Jesus    ⇒ Jesus Is Lord Christ Jesus has forgiven and remitted all sin for all mankind for all time.      But each person must come to grips with the fact that they need to receive that forgiveness by calling upon the Name Of Jesus.     In so doing they escape death and enter into eternal, abundant life.

(For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus). Act 8:16 Water Baptism did not fill the person being baptized.     It was a symbolic act, a public witness of faith In Christ Jesus.

And he spoke boldly in the name of the Lord Jesus, and disputed against the Grecians: but they went about to slay him. Act 9:29 Christians today seldom speak boldly about the Lord Jesus Christ.      Boldness implies a lack of fear of how the person with whom one is interacting will react to the message.

And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.     Then prayed they him to tarry certain days. Act 10:48 We should be baptized in the name of Jesus because that is the name our Creator has chosen for Himself and it is the body that He has chosen as His image.     Heb 1:3

When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Act 19:5 If they were simply Water Baptized, there was no spriritual, eternal accomplishment.      It is through faith that we receive the gift of Eternal Life by Grace Through Faith In Christ Jesus.     Rom 10:9,10

Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preaches. Act 19:13

And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified. Act 19:17 Satan fears the manifestation of the Word and power of the Holy Spirit.      Believers rejoice in it.

Then Paul answered, What mean you to weep and to break mine heart?     for I am ready not to be bound only, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus. Act 21:13 Paul went headlong into persecution because of his love for israel.     He was determined to preach Christ Jesus to them face to face regardless of the outcome.      What was the outcome?         → they rejected the message    → Paul had to be saved by the magistrate    → Paul went to Rome as a prisoner    → Paul was martyred.

And now why tarries you?     arise, and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Act 22:16

For whoever shall call upon the name of the Lord Jesus Christ shall be saved. Rom 10:13 What is the 'name of the Lord'?     Jesus.      What does it mean to 'call upon the name of the Lord'?     It means to come to the Creator calling Him by His name, Jesus, to plea for salvation.      God is just the generic name for deity.      Calling upon God will not save anyone.      Jesus is the express image of the only true and living God.     It is only in the name, Jesus, that anyone is saved.         → Jesus is the name of His Holy Spirit Father.      Understanding this gives real meaning to this important verse which declares the power of salvation in the name of Jesus.      When a person acknowledges that Jesus is Lord by calling on His name, His Holy Spirit performs the work of salvation in the heart of the caller.

And such were some of you: but you are washed, but you are sanctified, but you are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus by the Holy Spirit. 1Co 6:11 Whatever we were is now irrelevant because of what Christ has done for us and to us.      We are now New Creatures, New Spirit beings who are Sons Of The Holy Spirit and totally and eternally Accepted In The Beloved.     Eph 5:26

And whatsoever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to the Holy Spirit Father by him. Col 3:17 We are to see ourselves as ambassadors of Christ Jesus seeking opportunities to bring His truth and His blessings to those who are in darkness and suffering.      But we must willfully and knowingly determine to manifest as Sons Of The Holy Spirit.

Take, my brothers, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience. Jam 5:10 The Lord is our shield and our exceeding great reward Gen 15:1.      Life is about the pursuit of the Lord.     Any other pursuit is a dead end.

Is any sick among you?     let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ: Jam 5:14 The implication of this verse is that sickness is not to be tolerated.     When sickness manifests it is to be dealt with directly and powerfully.      The implication of the next verse Jam 5:15 is that every prayer in faith will produce the desired results.      The power of corporate prayer is in its agreement and unity.      The Holy Spirit moves in unity to effect His promises Eph 4:3.      The anointing with oil is a symbol of the Holy Spirit bringing healing to the sick through the finished work of Christ Jesus.      Calling on others to pray for you is a sign of faith.     To call is to ask by speaking.     The vocalization of our request is critical to receiving Mat 7:7.      To endure affliction is a sign of unbelief.
