| The Sermon On The Mount is the preparation for the Gospel which is good news. Throughout the sermon there is condemnation as well as hope. In order for us to turn loose our old ways we must → face the fact that they don't work and → see a better way. This is the objective of the sermon.
As we read the verses we must keep in mind that Jesus is preparing the people to receive Grace Through Faith and, as a result, to inherit His Kingdom Of Heaven. And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him: |
Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. |
Blessed are you, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. |
You are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. |
You are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. |
For truly I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. The Lord s Word will be fulfilled and nothing can thwart it. |
You have heard that it was said by them of old time, You shall not kill; and whoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment: |
But I say unto you, That whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whoever shall say, You fool, shall be in danger of hell fire. |
Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has ought against you; |
Agree with your adversary quickly, while you are in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver you to the judge, and the judge deliver you to the officer, and you be cast into prison. |
Truly I say unto you, You shall by no means come out there, till you have paid the uttermost farthing. An adversarial and belligerant attitude will only get you in trouble. |
And if your right eye offend you, pluck it out, and cast it from you: for it is profitable for you that one of your members should perish, and not that your whole body should be cast into hell. |
And if your right hand offend you, cut it off, and cast it from you: for it is profitable for you that one of your members should perish, and not that your whole body should be cast into hell. |
It has been said, Whoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement: Jesus emphasises the rigidity of the law. Though man makes allowances, the Lord doesn't. |
But I say unto you, That whoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causes her to commit adultery: and whoever shall marry her that is divorced commits adultery. |
Again, you have heard that it has been said by them of old time, You shall not forswear yourself, but shall perform unto the Lord your oaths: |
But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is the Lord's throne: You should not swear because you should always tell the truth. |
Neither shall you swear by your head, because you can not make one hair white or black. |
But let your communication be, Yes, yes; No, no: for whatsoever is more than these comes of evil. If a simple 'yes' or 'no' is not sufficient for the person you are communicating with, then that is a sign that there is untruth in you which is evil. |
You have heard that it has been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: |
But I say unto you, That you resist not evil: but whoever shall strike you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also. |
And if any man will sue you at the law, and take away your coat, let him have your cloak also. |
And whoever shall compel you to go a mile, go with him two. |
Give to him that asks you, and from him that would borrow of you turn not you away. |
But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; This is impossible for human beings by Human Love. Jesus is saying that the Lord loves everyone and that is the righteous position. Only the love of the Lord which proceeds from His Holy Spirit can enable you to Love Your Enemy in the right way. It is important to note that Jesus loved His enemies enough to die for them. But He also 1) rebuked them (), 2) called them names (), 3) warned them of perishing except they repent () and 4) ultimately rejected them that rejected Him ( ). We need to discern the difference between a lost person who is our enemy and a reprobate person who is our enemy. Jesus set free all those who believed on Him but He repudiated those who resis rebuked them , 2) called them names (), 3) warned them of perishing except they repent () and 4) ultimately rejected them that rejected Him ( ). For if you love them which love you, what reward have you? do not even the publicans the same? |
And if you salute your brothers only, what do you more than others? do not even the publicans so? |
Take heed that you do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise you have no reward of your heavenly Father. |
Therefore when you do your alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Truly I say unto you, They have their reward. |
And when you pray, you shall not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Truly I say unto you, They have their reward. |
But you, when you pray, enter into your closet, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father which is in secret; and your Father which sees in secret shall reward you openly. prayer is communication with the Lord. It is a personal matter. It is an intimate thing. It is besmirched by anything that is not sincere. |
Be not you therefore like unto them: for your Father knows what things you have need of, before you ask him. |
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. Remind yourself of the mercy that Christ has brought to you so that you can dispense mercy likewise. |
Moreover when you fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Truly I say unto you, They have their reward. Whatever you do, do it as unto the Lord and not as men pleaseers. |
But you, when you fastest, anoint your head, and wash your face; Try to look good, not pathetic. |
That you appear not unto men to fast, but unto your Father which is in secret: and your Father, which sees in secret, shall reward you openly. do it as unto the Lord and not as a man pleaser. |
Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what you shall eat, or what you shall drink; nor yet for your body, what you shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? |
Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your Heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much better than they? |
Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? We were designed by the Lord. Our limits were set by the Lord. It is impossible for us to make anything of ourselves that the Lord has not willed. We can, however, destroy ourselves. |
And why take you thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: |
And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. |
Wherefore, if the Lord so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? |
Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? Jesus is telling us not to worry about the provisions for life. It is not what we were designed to do. He has bigger and better things to occupy us. |
Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof. |
Judge not, that you be not judged. |
For with what judgment you judge, you shall be judged: and with what measure you mete, it shall be measured to you again. mercy and Grace are given to us in the measure we mete it out to others. |
Or how will you say to your brother, Let me pull out the mote out of your eye; and, behold, a beam is in your own eye? Without the wisdom of the Holy Spirit operating in and through us we are incapable of operating on anyone else. |
You hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of your own eye; and then shall you see clearly to cast out the mote out of your brother's eye. Objectivity is necessary to see the beam in our own eyes. Objectivity toward ourselves comes by the Holy Spirit and Truth. |
Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast you your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you. |
Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: |
Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? |
Therefore all things whatsoever you would that men should do to you, do you even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets. |
Enter you in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leads to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: |
Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leads unto life, and few there be that find it. |
Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. |
You shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? When a plant bears its fruit it becomes clear what kind of plant it is. |
Every tree that brings not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. |
Wherefore by their fruits you shall know them. |
And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. |
And every one that hears these sayings of mine, and does them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: |
And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it. |
