The following is from Cessationist ⇒
I realize that a cessationist would take exception with my definition of their position. However, if there is no power being manifested then there is no evidence that the Holy Spirit is involved. We also see a warning from the Holy Spirit through the Apostle Paul regarding those believers who would extricate the Holy Spirit from their faith.
Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. |
Power is essential to do work. This is why we need the power of the Lord, His Holy Spirit, in us as we go forth in His name.
Peter addressed the spirit of religion which invariably rejected the Holy Spirit in this:
At the root of all resistance to the Holy Spirit is control. Many believers are not willing to surrender control of their body to the Holy Spirit. Such often substitute good works in place of submission and obedience to the Holy Spirit.
Coupled with the individual believer`s desire to maintain control is the church hierarchy which seeks to maintain control of individual churches and denominations. This is done via doctrine and statements of faith. It is also done by publicly disparaging those who are continuationists.
We only need look at the weakness and ineffectiveness in all of Christianity to recognize that something is missing. That something is the Holy Spirit.
Again the cessationist would deny that they have rejected the Holy Spirit. However, the evidence of the Holy Spirit is power as indicated above.
To borrow from James: Show me the Holy Spirit without His power and I will show you the Holy Spirit by His power.
Lastly, the main purpose of Jesus coming to earth was not for us to be saved. Rather it was for us to be baptised with the Holy Spirit.
