You are the Salt of the Earth: but if the Salt have Lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth Good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. -
Mat 5:13
Why is it that Christians are called the Salt of the Earth rather than the Sugar of the Earth?
Actually, many Christians do try to interact with others in Sweetness rather than Saltiness.
But what does God expect us to be and how does He expect us talk and act?
His Word always has something to say about everything that is really important in life. Let's look at what the Word says about how we Talk, how we Live and how we interact with others.
Go you therefore, and Teach all nations, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the World. Amen. -
Mat 28:19,20
Jesus told His Disciples to teach everyone in the World to do the things that Jesus had told the Disciples to do.
What did Jesus tell His Disciples to do?
The Command to Repent is not a Sweet command. It is telling a person they are Wrong and must Change. It is like Salt in a Wound.
Condemning people is not Sweet. Jesus constantly raised the Morality bar so that everyone was Condemned.
Telling people that their Religion is a dead end is not Sweet.
Enter you in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the Way, that leads to Destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: -
Mat 7:13
Telling people that most of them will be Destroyed is not Sweet.
Threatening Judgment for Idolatry is not Sweet.
I could go on but hopefully the point has been made that much of the Truth is not Sweet.
Salt is necessary for Physical life. Sugar isn't.
In order for the Gospel (which means Good News and is amazingly Sweet) to be Received, the Heart must be Salted with Salt so that it appreciates the Gift of God by GraceThroughFaith.
So, don't just pass out the Sugar without first spreading the Salt.
Repentance does not make sense without awareness of being Wrong.
Forgiveness is not appreciated without awareness of Eternal Damnation.
The benefits of Grace are not appreciated without awareness of the destructiveness of Evil.
