Artificial Intelligence refers to Intelligence appearing outside of living organisms.
The primary non-organic instance of AI is in Computers.
However, Computers are built to serve the purposes of their creators, their programmers, their end users.
A truly AI Computer would not be restricted by its creator to do anything more specific than `think`, `choose` and then `act on its choice`. Hence it would use its computing power, decision logic, information gathering, analysis and evaluation to determine an unpredictable path going forward.
Just for clarification there are two terms that are important for understanding AI. `Deterministic` and `Stochastic`.
When something is deterministic then its outcome is predictable.
When something is stochastic there is enough randomness involved to make prediction impossible.
The internet is driven by profit so the models built into compter algorithms are highly deterministic.
Information is the raw material of the internet and data gathering, organization. analysis, reporting and selling is where most of the energy is spent.
Intelligence is the ability to process information in a totally independent, random ways, even involving seeking out new information and information processing techniques or value systems.
This is why we cannot predict how different people will respond to the same inputs. They bundle the specific inputs with other different sets based on different experiences and different value systems and so end up making different decisions.
This is a source of frustration for marketers. The marketer would wish that everyone would recognize their product an indispensible good buy.
Another key input to true Intelligence is sentience - the ability to perceive or feel things.
So, when we talk about AI the question becomes: "For what purpose?". Just because we can? Just to see what would happen?
Assuming we did build a truly AI Computer that could create through its intelligence, what would motivate it to do anything? You see, we always have to come back to a sentient intelligent being necessary to `program` the AI computer at least `a little bit`.
Lastly, assuming we did build a truly AI Computer and gave it just enough nudge to design something, what then? It would have to turn its design over to a mobile intelligent being to take the design to the next level.
In all things integration of the AI Computer with other skill sets and provision for control would be necessary for a completely independent AI Computer to do anything significant.
In conclusion, AI is no different than a fire arm. Unless it is attached to a vehicle to deliver, arm and fire it, it is just an oddity.
