Apart from The Flood when the Lord destroyed all of humanity except Noah and his immediate family, His judgments have been levied at cities.
→ Babel
→ Sodom
→ Gomorrah
→ Tyre
→ Sidon
→ Nineveh
I guess the explanation for this is that cities are where people congregate - and people are the problem.
I don`t say this in the sense that environmentalists would say it. Rather, I say it from a spirituality perspective.
Factories, restaurants, schools, etc are good things. However, the aggregation of humanity into large population centers has historically resulted in the proliferation of godless immorality.
Why is this?
→ there is strength in numbers
→ there is pride in man`s constructions
→ there are diversions from the Lord
But consider that our Lord will rule the earth at His return from the city of Jerusalem. So, we can`t say that the city concept is inherently evil.
In the city-centered Millennial Kingdom the Righteous Judge, our Lord Jesus Christ will rule over Jerusalem and the entire world.
It is the city leadership which determines whether the city is good or evil.
Here is how the life of a city goes:
→ it is founded by good men who honor the Lord
→ prosperity and growth occur
→ others hear of the prosperity and come
→ some that come are leeches
→ some that come are immoral
→ the leeches and the immorals rise to power
→ the city becomes corrupt
→ those in power enable corruption
→ the city needs to be destroyed
This is why Christians must take responsibility to be the leaders in every community, town, city and nation.
