Cognitive - of, relating to, being, or involving conscious intellectual activity
Dissonance - lack of harmony among musical notes
Experiencing Cognitive Dissonance is akin to being Double Minded in that a person with this disorder is in conflict with themself.
In some sense a person experiencing Cognitive Dissonance has a disconnect in their makeup. This enables them to think one way and act another without realizing the inconsistency.
Just as being Double Minded causes a person to be unstable in all their ways, Cognitive Dissonance results in instability and invariably manifests as insanity.
Just as physical exercise causes new muscle tissue to form changing the body shape, so likewise Cognitive Dissonance establishes new brain pathways which change the mental state of the victim from rational processing to irrational.
Logic suffers as a result of Cognitive Dissonance. It is impossible to have a threaded discussion with a person suffering from Cognitive Dissonance.
A victim of Cognitive Dissonance is unable to proceed from fact to fact in the direction of an inevitable conclusion. Rather they move in circular logic such that their assumptions are treated as facts.
Common Sense is the colloquial term used to describe the ability to reach a conclusion by a linear thought process.
When a person rejects the conclusion resulting from linear thought ( Common Sense) they must adopt an alternative mode of thinking - circular or self-supporting reasoning.
The result of rejecting linear thinking and adopting circular thinking is that the person becomes victim to Cognitive Dissonance.
This manifests in their expressed values not being played out in the actions. They will use a term and twist its meaning. They will attribute Evil to that which is Good and Good to that which is Evil.
In Biblical terms this is referred to as Darkness and having a Reprobate Mind.
Jesus said that the Truth sets us Free. Ignoring or disavowing Truth results in Bondage.
Examples of CognitiveDissonance:
- A politician espouses Socialism but lives like a King
- A Salesman promotes a product that he would not buy
- A Christian espouses Love but manifests hate and callousness
- A Conservative politician who supports Liberal agendas
Since Jesus is the Truth His followers should abide in the Truth.
We are instructed to be Sober. The sobriety references below are more about Sober Thinking than not drinking. It is about being Honest with ourselves and keeping our Thinking founded on Truth.
For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as the Lord has dealt to every man the measure of faith. |
Striving to Think soberly keeps us from being susceptible to Cognitive Dissonance.
