When we consider who we are in the NewBirth - sons of God , born of His Holy Spirit - we should be "self-centered" in the NewNature.

Jesus was self-centered.
How so? He said He came to speak the Word of His Father and do the work of His Father.
How is that self-centered?

Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our Faith ; who for the Joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. - Heb 12:2

Jesus did what He did for the Joy that was set before Him.

I and my Father are one. - Joh 10:30

Philip says unto him, Lord , show us the Father , and it sufficeth us. Jesus says unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet have you not known me, Philip? he that has seen me has seen the Father ; and how sayest you then, Show us the Father ? - Joh 14:8,9

Jesus did not consider Himself separate from the Father.
Neither should we.

That they all may be one; as you, Father , are in me, and I in you, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that you have sent me. - Joh 17:21

For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. - Gal 3:27

"Self-centered" does have a negative connotation, but when we consider that God's Will is for us to experience His Life which is Abundant and Eternal we are actually being "self-centered" when we pursue Him.

But Seek you first the Kingdom of God , and his Righteousness ; and all these things shall be added unto you. - Mat 6:33

In this verse Jesus acknowledges that we are created "self-centered". His instruction is for us to find fulfillment in the Father.

I confess that I am pursuing self-centeredness in the new creature that I am in Him. As I do so, I am overwhelmed with the awareness of His perfection, His love, His Grace and so lose myself in Him!
