The Fruit of the Holy Spirit describes the New Nature that is given to us at the New Birth.   
22 But the Fruit of the Spirit is Love , Joy , Peace , Longsuffering , Gentleness , Goodness , Faith ,
23 Meekness , Temperance : against such there is no Law.   

The first Fruit is Love.   As the Word says in it is the foundation of God`s Nature and thus our New Nature as we are now Sons of God.
