Unelected bureaucrats are a national scourge.
Here's the solution.
Since Senators haven't done anything worthwhile for a long time , I suggest they be assigned to Federal agencies as directors just like they are assigned to committees in Congress . These Senator-directors can be called Senadirs .
The Secretary of the agency would still be appointed by the president. They would set policy for the directors. However, the directors would be responsible for implementing regulations. A Senadir cannot be fired by the Secretary but the Secretary may ask the Senate for a replacement.
Since Sentors should know the Law and are responsible for legialation it is reasonable they assume the responsibility for the Regulations that follow.
So, if there is a problem with over-regulation ( excuse me , I meant to say "when" ), the Senadir would Consider whether or not the regulation met the apirit of the law.
For each unpopular Regulation the Senadir would have three options:
- determine the Regulation is an overreach of the Law and rescind it
- propose the underlying Law be rewritten
- face being voted out of office
The advantages of this strategy are:
- Makes the Senate responsible for the regulations flowing from legialation
- Gives each Senator something concrete to do
- Integrates the Executive and Legislative branches of government
- Connects budgeting with expenditures
- Reduces the number of political payback featherbeds.
- Makes the Senator more accountable to the voters for the ramifications of their legislation.
