Title: The values, focus and Spirit of the Church

Every church has a culture.   It's culture may be set intentionally or accidentally.

The Culture of a church is defined by the Leadership in that church.

What each church Leader shares and how they share it serves to shape Church Culture.

Church Cultures may be oriented toward:

Some Churches focus on worship looking for am emotional high.

Some Churches emphasize teaching with the goal of learning something new.

Some Churches use ceremony to achieve a mystical encounter with the Lord.

Some Churches function to provide a venue for the Leadership to ' Lead '.   Such churches have a Church Culture which tends toward entertainment.

Some Churches emphasize prayer sharing details of needs to the extent of mourning the needs.

What is the appropriate Church Culture?

To answer that question we should look at the Sciptures.
And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. -
The rock is 'the testimony of Jesus Christ'.     It is what saves us and enables us to overcome.

The church is the body of all believers in Christ Jesus.     The body is made up of people with 'the testimony of Jesus Christ'.

The Gates Of Hell will not withstand the church when the church wields its testimony.

Jesus is telling us that the church is to attack the gates of hell.
Praising God, and having favour with all the people.     And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved. -
The power of the Holy Spirit in a person's life will manifest love, joy, peace and unity.     Such an attitude will draw the lonely, depressed and troubled people to the light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Our testimony must be in Word and in power.

This verse tells us that the Church Culture should involve growth - growth by Conversions.
And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch.     And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people.     And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch. -

This verse tells us that teaching and discipleship should be part of the Church Culture
Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him. -

This verse shows us that Church Culture should include Intercessory prayer.
And when they were come, and had gathered the church together, they rehearsed all that God had done with them, and how he had opened the door of faith unto the Gentiles. -

This verse indicates that rehearsing the Lord's blessings is part of Church Culture.
Then pleased it the apostles and elders, with the whole church, to send chosen men of their own company to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas; namely, Judas surnamed Barsabas, and Silas, chief men among the brethren: -

The Church Culture should include sending Christians into the world to do the work of Christ.
And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. -
Our role is determined by a combination of the following:

Our desire

Our calling

the Lord's purpose

Our willingness

The Church Culture should include the manifestation of Holy Spirit gifts.   !inseet Edification should be part of Church Culture.
For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints. -
If chaos, disorder or conflict arise, the flesh has made an appearance.     The Holy Spirit will wait till the flesh is under control before participating.

Peace should be an aspect of Church Culture.
Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye. -
We need to take care of the physical needs of the brethren.

Receiving offerings and Ministering those offerings appropriately is part of Church Culture.
Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end.     Amen. -
The church is to manifest the glory of the Lord forever.

God shpuld be glorified through Church Culture.
That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. -
Christ has washed us in His blood and His Word.     He has filled us with His Spirit and He will finish the work that He has started in us so that it is perfect in Spirit, soul and body and fit for His kingdom at His appearing.

We are the workmanship of Christ Jesus and He will present us to Himself.
You see, if it is good, it is of the Holy Spirit, by the Holy Spirit and for the Holy Spirit.

This is to the praise and glory of the Lord in Christ Jesus!

Church Culture should emphasize that the church belongs to Christ.
But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. -
Leaders set the tone for how others should behave.

Decorum and reverence should be part of Church Culture.
Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee. -
Christ Jesus has done all things for the glory of the Lord.

Worship should be part of Church Culture.
Is any sick among you?     let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: -
The power of corporate prayer is in its agreement and unity.

The Holy Spirit moves in unity to effect the promises of the Lord.

The anointing with oil is a symbol of the Holy Spirit bringing healing to the sick through the finished work of Christ Jesus.

Church Culture should include healings and miracles.
He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches. -
What does He mean about having an ear?
It means to have a Love Of The Truth.
Those who have a Love Of The Truth want to know the truth while those who do not have a Love Of The Truth prefer lies and delusion.

Who is about to speak?
The Holy Spirit who is the Lord.

The Church Culture should inmvolve sensitivity to the Holy Spirit.
Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. -
Human Love often fails because it is a product of self.     Never be surprised when it disappoints or fails.

The Love Of The Lord is a fruit of the Holy Spirit.     It never disappoints or fails -

The Holy Spirit always operates in the love because He is love.     He makes us good and able to bear good fruit.

So check your words and actions with the test of love.     It they are not proceeding from the Love Of The Lord then they are likely to be doing more harm than good.

Love is the most important aspect of Church Culture.

So, we see how Church Culture as defined by the scriptures can differ significantly from that which is actually practiced in churches.

In order for us to please Christ and see the results that the Word promises we must be vigilant to maintain a scriptural Church Culture.
