The Bushes are double-minded people. On one hand they show true American sentiments. On the other hand they have a weakness for progressive ideology.
H.W. was not a good Republican. With the ground that Reagan prepared for him, he should have moved our country away from the destructive progressive thinking that was seething on campuses and government bureaucracy. But he failed to move forward on Reagan's path and showed his true character as a deceptive politician with a promise for no new taxes and subsequent signing tax increase legislation.
What is a "kinder, gentler nation"? Answer: a nation that spoils its young, subsidizes the unproductive, fails to enforce the law of the land and surrenders its national sovereignty to the U.N.
H.W. showed the shallowness of his American values by staging a war in Iraq as a great leader and then failing to make a lasting impact on the area. If he had had the character of a Reagan or Trump the 1990's would have been a time of national glory with the economy booming and a leader systematically removing progressive/communist programs.
G.W. rallied America after 911 , He showed American strength and grit. But what did he do long-term for America?
Given a second term and a burgeoning economy he could have seized the opportunity to turn America away from welfare and immoral, atheistic socialism. At best he only allowed it to fester and gain strength.
Why did Jeb Bush want to be president? Does anyone remember what he said he wanted to do while in office? (my)Answer: he wanted the honor of being president while maintaining a sense of resignation if not contentment regarding America's slide into Communism.
At best the Bushes are good people - people that you could enjoy being around. They and their likes (politicians whose main interest is self) are not good Americans.
