Though the forced abolition of slavery was the focal point of contention between the states and the expanding federal government, it was by no means the only point of contention. The U.S. was expanding its control over trade, favoring certain businesses (primarily northern manufacturing), paying sums of money for its agents at the expense of the states. In effect, the sovereignty of the states was being taken by legislative and judiciary force contrary to the Constitution .
For these reasons the seceding states felt that the terms of the compact that they had signed to form the U.S. had been violated and that they were within their rights to secede.
Confederate means 'con-federate'
'con' means 'against'
'federate' means centralized control
So, 'Confederate' means against Federal control.
This is what the Constitution gauranteed by saying that all Powers not explicitly assigned to the Federal Government fell under the states' jurisdiction.
The Confederacy was on the moral high ground in the CivilWar . Lincoln's Government was usurping the Authority of the states.
The ends do not justify the means.
This is true despite the Socialist agenda and means for obtaining it.
Slavery was only the specific instance of federal overreach. It was not the reason for the CivilWar. Federal overreach was.
N.C. passed a voter ID law which was struck down by federal court. This is unconstitutional and is indicative of the spirit that resulted in 600,000 lives being lost 155 years ago.
