Title: The central religious text of Islam

  • The Quran assumes familiarity with major narratives recounted in the Jewish and Christian scriptures. It summarizes some, dwells at length on others and, in some cases, presents alternative accounts and interpretations of events. The Quran describes itself as a book of guidance. It sometimes offers detailed accounts of specific historical events, and it often emphasizes the moral significance of an event over its narrative sequence. The Quran is used along with the hadith to interpret sharia law. During prayers, the Quran is recited only in Arabic.
  • Essentially the Quran makes threats against infidelity and disobedience before it clarifies the characteristics of Allah or his expectations. This is a classic way to entrap human beings. First, convince them of their jeopardy, then tell them the price they have to pay to escape.
Contrast this with the Gospel (good news of God's Love ) . Jesus came to give His Life a ransom for sins so that the Grace (unmerited favor) of God may be poured out upon us.
  • Selected passages:
    • Al-Baqarah [2:83] But they who believe and do good works those are the dwellers of Heaven; therein shall they abide. (believe what? what is a good work?)
    • Al-Baqarah [2:90] And when there came to them a Book from Allah, fulfilling that which is with them and before that they had prayed for victory over the disbelievers yet when there came to them that which they knew, they rejected it. The curse of Allah be on the disbelievers. (note the aggressiveness implied by the word "victory")
    • Al-Baqarah [2:109] Would you question the Messenger sent to you as Moses was questioned before this and whoever takes disbelief in exchange for belief has undoubtedly gone astray from the right path. (plays upon people's respect for Moses to get them to accept himself)
    • Al-Baqarah [2:110] Many of the People of the Book wish out of sheer envy from their own selves that, after you have believed, they could turn you again into disbelievers after the truth has become manifest to them. But forgive and turn away from them, till Allah brings about His decree. Surely, Allah has the power to do all that He wills (a deceiver accuses others of his own crime - in this case it is "envy")
    • Al-Baqarah [2:112] And they say, "None shall ever enter Heaven unless he be a Jew or a Christian." These are their vain desires. Say, "Produce your proof, if you are truthful." (false accusation - whoever said that only Jews or Christians will be saved?)
    • Al-Baqarah [2:128] And remember the time when Abraham and Ishmael raised the foundations of the House, praying, "Our Lord, accept this from us; for Thou art All-Hearing, All-Knowing. (completely made up)
    • Al-Baqarah [2:130] And, our Lord, raise up among them a Messenger from among themselves, who may recite to them Thy Signs and teach them the Book and Wisdom and may purify them; surely, Thou art the Mighty, the Wise. (convince us that god sent him as the messenger - blowing his own horn)
    • Al-Baqarah [2:133] The same did Abraham enjoin upon his sons and so did Jacob saying: "O my sons, truly Allah has chosen this religion for you; so let not death overtake you except when you are in a state of submission." (fabrication)
    • Al-Baqarah [2:137] Say ye: "We believe in Allah and what has been revealed to us, and what was revealed to Abraham and Ishmael, and Isaac, and Jacob and his children, and what was given to Moses and Jesus, and what was given to all other Prophets from their Lord. We make no difference between any of them; and to Him we submit ourselves." (sounds inclusory)
    • Al-Baqarah [2:180] And there is life for you in the law of retaliation, O men of understanding, that you may enjoy security. (wow, that explains a lot)
    • Al-Baqarah [2:184] O ye who believe! fasting is prescribed for you, as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may become righteous. (how much fasting is necessary to make one righteous)
    • Al-Baqarah [2:194] And fight them until there is no persecution, and religion is freely professed for Allah. But if they desist, then remember that no hostility is allowed except against the aggressors. (note they are to fight until everyone worships Allah )
    • Al-Baqarah [2:195] The violation of a Sacred Month should be retaliated in the Sacred Month; and for all sacred things there is the law of retaliation. So, whoso transgresses against you, punish him for his transgression to the extent to which he has transgressed against you. And fear Allah and know that Allah is with those who fear Him. (what an attractive statement)
    • Al-Baqarah [2:217] Fighting is ordained for you, though it is repugnant to you; but it may be that you dislike a thing while it is good for you, and it may be that you like a thing while it is bad for you. Allah knows all things, and you know not. (explains a lot)
    • This rotten stuff goes on and on!
