For other Foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
Once a person has laid the correct Foundation , Christ Jesus , they should Never re-lay it.
1 Therefore leaving the Principles of the Doctrine of Christ , let us go on unto Perfection ; not laying again the Foundation of Repentance from Dead Works , and of Faith toward God ,
2 of the Doctrine of Baptisms , and of laying on of hands, and of Resurrection of the Dead , and of Eternal Judgment.
3 And this will we do, if God permit.
4 For it is impossible for those who were once Enlightened , and have tasted of the Heavenly Gift , and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost ,
5 and have tasted the Good Word of God , and the Powers of the world to come,
6 if they shall fall away, to renew them again unto Repentance ; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.
7 For the Earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed, receiveth Blessing from God :
8 but that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto Cursing ; whose end is to be burned.
Why is this Scripture delivered so sharply?
Because is Speaks to Blasphemy of the Gospel which is our Eternal Security. Christ died once for all for all Sin for all time.
A person does not 'fall away' by committing Sin. They didn't get Saved by stopping their Sin but rather by Believing on the Lord Jesus Christ. So, they 'fall away' by stopping Believing in Christ Jesus.
If we continue reading we See that Eternal Security as the Gift for Conversion to Christ.
9 But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you , and things that accompany Salvation , though we thus Speak.
10 For God is not Unrighteous to forget your Work and Labour of Love , which ye have shewed toward his Name , in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do Minister.
11 And we Desire that every one of you do shew the same Diligence to the full assurance of Hope unto the end:
12 that ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through Faith and Patience Inherit the Promises.
Notice the phrase 'full assurance of Hope unto the end'. This is the expectation that Christ who started the Work in us will complete it.
So, to Teach that a person can be Converted multiple times is error.
If a person 'backslides' they remain a Son Just as the Prodigal Son remained a Son even in the pig sty. His Instinct was to Think of Himself as a servant , not worthy to be called a Son , but his Father would have nothing to do with it.
If a person has ever Received Christ as Savior and Lord they are eternally secure because Sonship is the Gift of God by Christ Jesus.
That Gift will never be taken away. We cannot Lose it. We must denounce it to be Lost again. Once that happens a person will never want to be Saved again.
That is Why Paul said he was persuaded of better things of the hearers. When dealing with a 'backslidden' Christian we should remind them of God's Love and His New Covenant that is not based on Performance but on Relationship.
Encourage them to Thank God for His Patient Love and Mercy and Praise Christ for His Perfect Sacrifice. Encourage them to begin exploring their Relationship with Christ through the Holy Spirit and the Word.
Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault , ye which are Spiritual , Restore such an one in the Spirit of Meekness ; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.
So we must Think in terms of restoring rather than rebuilding when dealing with Believers who are overtaken by the cares of this world.
Try to out- Love your Heavenly Father when dealing with people. You will begin to Understand the meaning of Grace in a much deeper fashion.
