The name of the book of hebrews is the key to understanding it. The Jews of Jesus` and Paul`s day were unwilling to give up on the Mosaic Law of sacrifices and obedience-based favor from God. Many of the early believing Jews (under Paul`s ministry) were being coerced into going back into legalism. So, Paul writes to them warning them of contaminating Grace with legalism. Fundamentally, when you add ANY legalism to Grace you nullify its power. How so? Grace is unmerited favor. Trying to earn favor is an abomination to the Holy Spirit as it denigrates the perfect finished work of Jesus Christ. This is why Paul cursed anyone who would contaminate the Gospel of Jesus Christ with aspects of legalism . How much obedience is sufficient? When would we truly be accepted if it were of works? This is not to say we don`t obey and produce works but it is Christ in us who actually performs acceptable works by His Holy Spirit in us. Satan knows the power of unadulterated Grace and he works extremely hard to undermine our faith in it

For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins. By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. )

Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with meats, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein. Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate. Let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach. For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come. By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name. )
