We are to
teach all
nations. What
do we
teach? The
Gospel of
Jesus Christ.
What is the key component of the Gospel? That Jesus is the Truth about our Creator.
What is the Truth? That Jesus is the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
But how can Jesus be the Father and the Son? To understand this we must know who the Father is. He is the Holy Spirit.
Jesus said 'I and my Father are One'. This means that the Holy Spirit Father is the Spirit Of Christ Jesus. Jesus spoke through the prophets about Himself. He then became the person He prophesied about - Jesus.
Jesus fathered Himself by His Holy Spirit, just as He raised Himself from the dead by His Holy Spirit.
So, rather than talking about some confusing trinitarian circular logic about the three-in-one godhead, we aught to recognize that Jesus is the name of the Father, that Jesus is the name of the Son and that Jesus is the name of the Holy Spirit.
The 'name' of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit is 'Jesus'. Jesus is the Father. He is the Son. He is the Holy Spirit.
'Baptize' simply means 'immerse'.
Jesus did not specify that we be baptized in water. Rather, He said we were to be baptized in 'the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit'. Jesus is that name. We are to be immersed in Him who is the Truth about deity.
The Truth is that we should speak of 'God' only in the context of Jesus. Otherwise we move into an area of speculation, mysticism and error. Jesus is the only Truth about 'God'. Note that we are to grow in Grace and knowledge of Christ Jesus and not 'God' .
A key aspect of the Truth of Jesus is His being the express image of the Holy Spirit, our Heavenly Father. Jesus is a divine man. He is Spirit Soul And Body. His Spirit is the Holy Spirit, and that which the Holy Spirit fathered is His Soul and Body. Jesus Is Lord.
So, teaching is the means by which people are immersed into Christ Jesus, understanding who He is, what He did and what He expects from us.
Water Baptism is a ritual and should be treated as such. It is not spiritual. Teaching and immersing the hearers into Jesus is the point of this verse.
